Work Sharing and Work Delegation

Mandrel 2 provides a capability to delegate parts of a project to other people or workgroups, and then to integrate their work into your own.

Mandrel 2 allows you to split off, or export, a section of your cost breakdown structure as an independent subordinate file, or subfile, together with all the required supporting data. You can then give this subfile to another individual or workgroup for their input. The recipients, or subfile owners, may then develop their subfile as they would any other Mandrel file. This includes expanding their section of the cost breakdown structure, inserting cost item data, and adding or modifying general data fields.

When a subfile has been satisfactorily 'fleshed out' it can be returned to you, and you can then import it back into your file. The data in the subfile will be seamlessly integrated into your file.

Subfile owners may also delegate parts of their own work to others by splitting off their own subfiles, and so on indefinitely. A multi-level subfile structure can be built up in this way:

Import Sequence

The top-level file is known as the master file, and is the file in which all of the delegated work will eventually reside. As data entry is completed in the example shown above, level 3 subfiles would be imported into their level 2 parents, then level 2 subfiles into their level 1 parents, and finally level 1 subfiles into the master file.

Multi-Level Imports

You can also make multi-level imports. Suppose some new information is received which is entered into a level 3 subfile such as subfile 2,1,4 (commas are used as separators in subfile numbers rather than periods to avoid confusion with cost item numbers). Provided all the intermediate single-level imports described above have occurred, you can then import the updated subfile 2,1,4 directly into the master file.
